  ""26th January 2000: Some students of Shibli National PG College, Azamgarh, 
  U.P., India (Muslim Minority institution estb. 1833) forced the Staff to 
  sing Vande Matr.... song. As the song is considered blasphemous by them, 
  they refused. A section of Muslim students confronted the votaries of Vande 
  Matr...... song outside the College campus. Tension among the students
built 
  up. College administration duly informed district authorities apprehending 
  trouble the next day.

  27th January 2000: Votaries of Vande Matr...... , mostly belonging to
V.H.P. 
  and R.S.S (Anti minority organisations) came to the College with 
  reinforcement from the adjoining Schools and Colleges and tried to browbeat 
  the College administration. Scuffling took place between the College Staff 
  and Students owing allegiance to V.H.P and R.S.S. They started brickbatting 
  the College Staff, damaging and burning College property. College 
  administration tried to contant the district administration but the 
  telephones were constantly engaged (out of order). The mob soon turned into 
  a procession and marched on the streets of the city with impunity. They 
  burned the Holy Quran, vehicles, looted shops, clinics and injured Muslims 
  by identifying them. They gatecrashed the internationally acclaimed Darul 
  Musannefin Shibli Academy damaging property and injuring eminent scholars, 
  one of them got seriously injured with their brickbatting. They raised 
  slogans "Hindustan me rahna hoga to Vande Matram kahna hoga" (To live in 
  India will have to say Vande Matram).

  28th January 2000: Curfew was imposed around 2 p.m. While the police was 
  busy in arresting and torturing Muslim youths, the miscreants belonging to 
  V.H.P. and R.S.S could gather enough courage and support to manhandle 
  bearded Muslims who by chance happen to pass their way. They threw carcass 
  of Pig in a mosque during the curfew. A Clinic belonging to Muslim Doctor 
  was burned during curfew in daytime. District Magistrate in a meeting with 
  public representatives (M.P. and M.L.A.s)disclosed 33 arrests, out of which 
  20 are Muslim youths. Nobody knows about their present state in Kotwali 
  (Police Station). Public representatives were not allowed to meet them.
  All incidents took place with the connivance of district administration and 
  all doors of justice have been closed. Muslims have nothing to do except 
  pray for some miracle.
  We, the Muslims of Azamgarh, U.P., India, appeal to anybody who could help 
  us save our life, property and honour.""
