Brief history

India Policy Institute (IPI) started as an offshoot of the india_policy mailing list commenced by Sanjeev Sabhlok in February 1998 as part of his commitment to bring policies of liberty to India. It was registered in Hyderabad in 1999 as a Trust by Ajay Gandhi and became one of India’s premier think tanks on public policy.

It undertook significant work through online debates to create a People’s Manifesto, a key policy document of its time. The People’s Manifesto has influenced many people across the country through its various offshoots (such as Sone Ki Chidiya Total Reform Agenda and the manifesto of the Swarna Bharat Party).

It organised a major conference for India’s liberals in 2004, and a governance conference in 2013. In 2009 IPI launched a policy magazine (which morphed for a few years into a magazine, Towards a Great India).

The Institute published Rahul Rana’s Hindi translation of Bastiat’s The Law in 2017.

Re-establishment as a Trust in 2021
