You are forgetting an important reason for terrorism - religious and
ethnic extremism. Why were people in Punjab engaging in terrorism even
though there was no widespread poverty there? In fact, these terrorist
were financed by people living in Canada, US and Europe. And there was
no lack of freedom in Punjab.

I think people in non-western countries are still tied to their ethnic,
religious, and caste based communities. They have not adopted
themselves to the concept of democracy and freedom. That is precisely
the reason why Muslim countries still want to impose centuries old
Islamic code on the concept of Nation! They still can't get over it.

Western countries flourished precisely because of protestant revolution
and separation of church and state. They realized that in order to
support expanding trade and commerce and peaceful existence among
diverse population secularism was indeed necessary. They were able
throw away the baggage of rotten religious concepts when it came to
science, technology, adminstration and trade. Other people are still
not able to do that. And that is the reason for terrorism. The
frustration that the religious, caste and ethnic concepts which are so
relevant when it comes to family and small community do not work when
it comes a huge Nation consisting of diverse population is too much to
handle for them.

And remember that those Western countries and colonies (like say South
Africa) who could not handle these things faced numerous problems. It
was not very long ago that Americans had to go through Civil War in
order to get rid of slavery and racism. The North American colonies
which did not carry the baggage of racism and slavery developed rapidly
compared to their southern counterpart.
