More on Mr. Guptara's erroneous information

Please help make the Manifesto better, or accept it, and propagate it!
Mr. Ashok Chowgule informs us below inter alia that Mr. Guptara's
information is erroneous on at least one factual count; Mr. Arun Shourie,
BJP Rajya Sabha MP, has no nephew by the name of Chandrakant Shourie. Mr.
Guptara is once more challenged to either establish his facts or withdraw
his factual claims.

Subject: Attack on Chandrakant Shourie

>To: Dr Subroto Roy.
>From: Ashok Chowgule.
>13 January, 1999.
>Dear Dr Roy,
>Thank you for sending me the item posted by Shri Guptara re Chandrakant
>Shourie. I was somewhat disturbed by it. At the same time, I wondered
>about the fact that there was no mention in any of the newspapers in India
>about the incident, even after nearly fifteen days of its happening.
>So, I contacted Shri Arun Shourie, so that such a serious incident should
>known to him. After all, if his nephew is being treated in this manner,
>surely Shri Arun Shourie, as a minister, will be able to help him.
>Shri Arun Shourie informs me that there is nephew of his by the name of
>Chandrakant Shourie in his family. To the best of his knowledge, there is
>no close relation of his by this name either, and he knows no one amongst
>his relations, with either another first or last name, who is working in
>tribal areas. Shri Arun Shourie's only brother is about 52 years old, so
>would be most unlikely that he would have a son of about 45 years. (I come
>to this age since the posting says that Chandrakant is working in the area
>for twenty years, and has gone there after his graduation from
>In the past, Shri Arun Shourie had written about the tremendous work being
>done by the Hindus in uplifting the society, with no thought of conversion.
>I would have thought that if there was a family member doing what
>Chandrakant is doing, surely he would have mentioned it.
>Besides Shri Arun Shourie, I also contacted others who know the family.
>(Shri Arun Shourie was the first person I tried to contact, but he was not
>at home.) They too confirm what Shri Arun Shourie told me. Incidentally,
>contacted the number that was given, but the phone was only ringing. So,
>you can see that I spent (or should I say wasted?) quite some effort and
>time in trying to establish the identity of Chandrakant.
>It is quite likely that there is one Chandrakant Shourie working in the
>area. If Chandrakant has an email connection, and a phone number with an
>STD code, the place where he is working cannot be very remote. So, the news
>about the incident would have been available to the media quite easily.
>Anyway, can you request Shri Guptara to make further investigation in the
>matter, by contacting Chandrakant either on phone or through email, and get
>more details? I think that it is particularly important to establish the
>relationship between Chandrakant and Shri Arun Shourie. If the news item
>correct, even if there is no relationship between the two, the incident
>should be given proper publicity. However, in so doing, no falsehood on
>relation should be given.
>Incidentally, the posting says that Shri Vishal Mangalwadi knows
>very well - to the extent that a book by the former is dedicated to the
>latter. Perhaps you can also contact Shri Mangalwadi and request him to
>throw light on the whole incident, particularly on the question of the
>relationship between Chandrakant and Shri Arun Shourie.
>Or Shri Guptara could go to the source where he got the report from. It
>seems that there is some organisation that is behind its release, and it
>would be proper for Shri Guptara to disclose the identity.
>Ashok Chowgule.
